Freedom Week
Celebrated During the Week of Memorial Day
On June 7, 2001, Governor Rick Perry signed into law, House Bill 1776 requiring Social Studies classes in grades 3-12 to spend time learning about topics such as the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Women's Movement for Equality. The purpose of Celebrate Freedom Week is “to educate students about the sacrifices made for freedom in the founding of this country and the values on which this country was founded.”
