RETURN TO GT HOMEPAGE

Teachers, parents, counselors, or administrative personnel may nominate students for NEISD gifted programs. Qualifying K-2 students are reassessed at the beginning of the 3rd Grade and 3-5 students are reassessed the end of 5th grade for entering the middle school G/T programs.

Elementary:
North East has a unique program for gifted elementary students grades K-5. To qualify, students need to score in the high 90's on a majority of the standardized tests given. Students who have been tested and identified as intellectually and academically gifted will attend G/T classes for 2 1/2 to 5 hours each week. Nomination must be made prior to the second week of school for the 2nd-5th graders, prior to the 7th week of school for 1st graders, prior to Jan. 1 for Kindergartners, and prior to Feb. 15th for middle school. Current NEISD students that are not nominated by the assigned times will be asked to wait for the following year's testing.

Elementary Testing Periods:
Grades 2, 3, 4, & 5 are tested the 1st week of school through the 3rd week .
1st Grade testing is from the 7th week of school through the 9th week.
Kindergarten testing is done in January.
5th graders are tested for Middle School G/T Math & G/T English in late February and March, depending on TAKS dates.
*** If nominated, new students enrolling in North East Schools after the normal testing periods will be tested as soon as scores from the previous school arrive.

Secondary:
North East has three unique programs for secondary gifted students: A gifted math program with a science emphasis, a gifted English program with a social studies emphasis, and a performing arts high school, NESA. Due to the depth and acceleration (2-5 yrs.) of secondary English and Math gifted classes, nominated students should have consistently high grades and high test scores on nationally normed tests. Nomination should be made prior to appropriate testing periods through the student's counselor. To qualify, students need to score in the high 90's on a majority of the standardized tests given. Students audition for admittance to NESA. Contact NESA directly (442-2505) for audition dates.

Secondary Testing Periods:
Students new to NEISD are tested on a Saturday between the summer enrollment period and the first day of school or if they enroll late, as soon as possible after their enrollment.
Current NEISD Students - Testing is done in the spring at each campus during the school day. Nominations should be made before April 1. Qualifying students begin G/T classes the next fall.

Please note the differences between a high achiever and a gifted learner.

Specific Nomination Information

If your child consistently has scores from nationally normed tests in the high 90's and has the characteristics of a "gifted learner", rather than a "high achiever", and you want to nominate him/her for testing, please contact your school's G/T teacher at the elementary level or counselor at the secondary level before the appropriate test times (see above for specific times). Please have copies of last year's report card and any nationally normed testing less than one year old available. After testing is completed, a committee with G/T training will determine qualification. The committee qualifies students based on high scores that indicate the student has the ability to understand in-depth issues in multiple ways in an accelerated, complex program.
