The Kindergarten program at Coker is based on standards developed by NEISD. The standards are broken down into four areas of learning: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

ABC writingLanguage Arts

Students engage in a variety of activities that help them develop oral language skills. Through daily journal writing, story responses, class books, and the morning message students are introduced to the following: left to right and top to bottom reading progression, simple story structure, spacing between words, letter identification, letter/sound association, punctuation, story retelling, and much more. Students begin to associate spoken sounds with letters that represent them, then use this knowledge to read words and simple stories. This also helps them begin to write by themselves.

The focus is on the self, home, family and the classroom. Students learn customs, symbols, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principles and contribute to our national identity. The study of our state and national heritage begins with an examination of the patriotic holidays and the contributions of historical people.

Students describe objects, express relationships, make predictions and solve problems as they build an understanding of number, operation, shape and scope.

Parent - Teacher Conferences

Parent - Teacher Conferences are scheduled near the end of the first six weeks of school. Parents are encouraged to meet with their child's teacher. Parents and teachers may also meet as needed throughout the year.

Help from Home

Families are strongly encouraged to read together on a daily basis. Students will be responsible for keeping a Poetry Notebook in class. The notebook will be sent home on Thursdays to be shared with the family, and returned to school on Friday. PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!
