Reading/Language
Arts
In second grade students read and
write independently. They understand different purposes for
speaking and listening. Students read for understanding and
fluency in a variety of genres. They summarize what they
read and represent ideas acquired with story maps, charts,
and drawings.
|
Social Studies

Students will learn about some of
the customs, symbols, and celebrations, as well as the
history, the government and the geography of our community,
our state, and our nation. They will learn about consumers
and producers and how natural resources are used. Students
will use simple geographic tools and begin to develop an
understanding of chronology through the use of calendars and
timelines.
|
Science
The study of science includes
conducting investigations to develop the skills of
measuring, using tools, classifying, and identifying
patterns. The students give an understanding of the water
cycle, weathering, and the needs of plants and
animals.
|
Math
Our primary focus is comparing and
ordering whole numbers, applying addition and subtraction,
stressing problem solving, patterning, using measurement
processes, probability, and collecting, organizing, and
displaying data. An investigative hands-on process is
used.
|
Travel
Folders
Students will be responsible for
having a "Travel" folder at school each day. These folders
will go home every day and are to be checked daily for
homework assignments, graded papers and special
notes.
|
Homework
Students will have homework. They
should read nightly, practice spelling words, use spelling
words in sentences and paragraphs, practice math facts, do
unfinished daily work, or do other teacher designated
work.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parents are encouraged to meet with
their child's teacher. Conferences are scheduled following
the first six weeks of school. Parents and teachers may
schedule other conferences as needed throughout the
year.
