Coker’s First Grade focuses on building your child’s confidence in
reading, writing, and spelling. The Language Art’s curriculum builds with the
knowledge of our students. Our reading program utilizes Guided Reading
techniques with phonic instruction for support. Handwriting is taught using D’Nealian
Manuscript, and Spelling Units are taught from the Houghton-Mifflin text. Coker’s math program offers a thorough approach to instill quantitative
skills. Investigative Math techniques allows students to benefit from a variety
of hands-on manipulatives while the Harcourt-Brace math text provides written
practice for essential skills. Coker provides a variety of investigations in science. These experiments
provide age-appropriate materials for students as they learn the fundamentals of
scientific method and concepts. Coker utilizes My World - Adventures in Time and Place by
MacMillian/McGraw-Hill.
This text offers great activities to enrich the standard curriculum. Coker teachers strive to maintain open communication throughout the school
year. Parents receive daily reports of student conduct, as well as weekly
classroom updates and "Wednesday Mail." Parent- teacher conferences
are scheduled for all parents at the end of the first Six Weeks and are also
available at a parent’s request. First Graders are expected to read with their parents every night for 15 - 20
min. Parents need to read to their children, as well as support their child’s
independent reading. First Graders must practice math facts daily, and complete
teacher assigned homework. *All Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), as well as the North East Standards comprise the content of the Coker curriculum.
