The goal of first grade is to create independent readers, writers, and mathematicians, who also develop a love for learning. In order to develop successful readers, we are using the 4 Blocks model. This learning model includes a writing block, a phonics block, a guided reading block, and a self-selected reading block. In math, we are using Investigations math and the textbook to investigate problem solving, number concepts, patterns, and simple addition and subtraction. Our focus in science will be the study of rocks, soils, and minerals. In art, we will learn how shapes and lines are used to create a variety of images.
