Course Description: This course emphasizes the conventions and mechanics of written English, the appropriate and effective application of English grammar, and the effective use of vocabulary. Students are expected to understand the recursive nature of the writing process.

Course Description: This is a required course for LEP students who are concurrently enrolled in regular English IV classes and are designated seniors. Students will write in a variety of forms for various issues and purposes. They will plan, draft and complete written compositions both traditionally and electronically. Students continue to read extensively texts selected in multiple genres for a variety of purposes. Students will respond to texts verbally and in writing. Students will connect their knowledge of the world and the knowledge they gather from other texts with the text being read. They will apply their knowledge and literacy in their native language to the second language. The course will be taught using ESL methodology.

Course Description: Reading III offers students instruction in comprehension strategies and vocabulary to ensure that junior and/or seniors have an opportunity to read with competence, confidence, and understanding. The critical reading skills, TEKS, reading rate, context, and strategies are covered in Reading III. Instruction also includes strategies useful for test taking and college entrance, in addition to TAKS. All reading strategies are applied in contexts that cross the subject fields.

Course: SAT Prep Reading Application and Study Skills
Credit: 0.5 Grade Placement: 11 - 12
Prerequisites: High school students, especially the students preparing for the demands of college, may enroll in the one semester course Reading Application and Study Skills.
Course Description: In this course, students learn techniques for learning from texts including studying word meanings, producing effective summaries, identifying and relating key ideas, drawing and supporting inferences, and reviewing study strategies and test taking including college entrance exams. In addition, students will have opportunities to respond critically to literary texts. Students accomplish many of the objectives through with reading as well as use of (cross-curricular) content texts in preparation for post secondary schooling.

Course: Creative Writing

Course Description: Creative writing is for the student who enjoys writing on his own and would like to develop his creativity and increase his output. Writing is concentrated on the genres of poetry, short story, and various types of essays. The course involves keeping a journal of observations and ideas to serve as a springboard to creative invention. Students will frequently work on a one-to-one basis with the instructor to develop individual projects. Students are encouraged to participate in writing workshops and contests.
