Have a Great Summer!

Another year has come to and end, and a new beginning is on the horizon.  The halls are empty, classrooms void of youthful chatter, all preparing for a new year.  We wish you and your families a relaxing break and we look forward to seeing you next year.  Have a great summer.

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date."

—William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Black History Month

Every February, Americans celebrate Black History Month. This tribute dates back to 1926 and is credited to a Harvard scholar named Carter G. Woodson. The son of former slaves, Woodson dedicated his life to ensuring that black history was accurately documented and disseminated.

In an effort to bring national attention to the contributions of black Americans, Woodson chose the second week of February in honor of the birthdays of pivotal black supporters Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

From Jackie Robinson to Tiger Woods, Harriet Tubman to Barack Obama, Black History Month pays tribute to inspirational African Americans from the past, as well as those who will continue to make history well into the future. View the history of Black History Month and watch a video at the History Channel.

We Wish You and Your Families a Happy Thanksgiving

"Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors." --Edward Winslow from A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, in 1621

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast which is now known as the first Thanksgiving.

While cooking methods and table etiquette have changed as the holiday has evolved, the meal is still consumed today with the same spirit of celebration and might I add, overindulgence.  May your holiday be filled with joy, good spirit, family and lots of turkey.

The History Channel offers a short video on the rich history of Thanksgiving.  You can view the video in its entirety here:  VIDEO

Veteran's Day Remembered, November 11

On Veterans Day, November 11, the country will recognize America's 25 million living veterans.  This is a time for us to pause and reflect upon the sacrifices of our Nation's military veterans, past and present.  It is a time not only to recognize them with public ceremonies but also to seek them out, thank them, and learn from them.  Center School remembers and is grateful for all of those that have served and continue to serve this great country.  Please visit the following link for more information on Veteran's Day.

North East Open Doors to Hurricane Evacuees

Texas Governor Rick Perry and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) have directed public schools to open the doors to hurricane evacuees coming to Texas. Since it may be several months before their own schools will reopen, displaced students will need to be enrolled in area schools.

"I want stranded families to know the doors of Texas' public schools are immediately open to your school-aged children," said Governor Perry. "I also want school leaders to know that we realize this will put a strain on their capacity, so I have asked the Texas Education Agency to work [with] them to make sure they have the textbooks they need, funding for transportation and the free-and-reduced lunch program and class size waivers as needed."

Book Week Celebrated

North East ISD is celebrating Children's Book Week from Nov. 13-19, 2006 by encouraging all campuses and community members to participate in reading books to children.  The theme this year is "More Books, Please!"  Children's Book Week was established in 1919 to encourage the love of books and reading at a time when literacy rates and reading proficiency were declining.  Children's Book Week is a time to increase literacy and encourage students to discover a world beyond their own through books.
