Happenings

Mid-August Mrs. Feldman will begin reading books between 7:15 a.m. and 7:35 a.m.  She will chose fun chapter books to share and also read some of the Bluebonnet books for the school year 2007/2008.  This is not check out time or computer time.  Interested LISTENERS are encouraged to attend.

Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will participate in the Bluebonnet Award Program of the Texas Library Association.  Students are eligible to vote for their favorite title if they read a minimum of 5 books.  The theme is “READ 5 AND DECIDE”.  After the winner is announced we will have a Bluebonnet celebration.

We will continue the tradition of having authors, illustrators and storytellers for the students.  Claire and Monte Montgomery will appear November 6 and will tell about their Bluebonnet-nominated book, Hubert Invents the Wheel.  Nina Laden, the author of Romeow and Drooliet and When Pigasso met Mootisse will speak in May.  We had hoped to have my particular favorite, Patricia Polacco, but she opted for a tour of the west coast.  Maybe she can come another year but in the mean time we are looking for other options.

It takes money to bring quality programming to our school.  We will have two Scholastic Book Fairs this year.  The Fall Book Fair will be held the week of November 12-16.  This is one for profit.  The Spring Book Fair will be a half price sale to get books in the kids’ hands for the summer.

In January we will have the Readers’ Digest QSP magazine subscription fundraiser.  At this time students will receive prizes for the items they sell.  HOWEVER, if you need a magazine you may get them anytime during the year and Castle Hills Elementary will still receive 40% profit for each subscription.  Go to www.qsp.com and use 425027304 as the account number or select Texas as the state, type in Castle Hills Elementary (in SAN ANTONIO) and place your order.

If you have any questions contact Mrs. Feldman at 442-0600, ext. 231 or ffeldm@neisd.net.
