Parent Information:

Dear Parents of NJHS Members,

We share your pride in having your son or daughter as a member of the National Junior Honor Society.  The purpose of the NJHS is “to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship in the students of Barbara Bush Middle School” (NJHS Constitution).  In order to maintain these high standards, we wanted to share with you the expectations of a society member.

First and foremost, it is essential that members attend general meetings, usually held the first Tuesday of each month in the library at 7:45am the first semester and 8:00am the second semester.  If a student misses a general meeting, he or she must submit to his or her committee officer a signed note from you stating the reason for the absence in order to be excused from the meeting.

Secondly, members are required to earn service hours.  Members must earn ten service hours per semester.  Members are responsible for getting their service hour forms signed and turned in to their committee officer each semester.  Service hours can be anything done to help someone else without receiving compensation for the service; for example, baby-sitting, mowing the lawn, tutoring, helping a teacher, or participating in any of the school or community service projects the NJHS offers like the MS Walk or Stuff-a-Stocking in December.  Additionally, members can earn service hours by bringing in canned food items at any time during the year.  Ten food cans equal one service hour.  Canned items can be turned in to Mrs. Cloud in room 110A, and she can sign the service hour form.  Service hours can be counted from June 01, 2007 – any service done during the summer can count for the first semester’s hours.  Students striving to earn the President’s Service Award can also count these hours towards that goal, which is a minimum of 50 hours.

Unfortunately, members aren’t always willing or able to meet society expectations and standards.  In those instances, the anonymous Faculty Council will review the situation and may decide to place a member on probation or pursue dismissal.  This may occur when a member has three unexcused absences from general meetings, extreme or persistent behavior problems, or does not maintain the equivalent of a 90 average.  Grades are checked at semester, and members are notified if they have fallen below that standard.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the policies and expectations of the National Junior Honor Society, please email Ms. Bey at jbey050@neisd.net.

Respectfully,

Ms. Juli Bey
