AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY

 

The Automotive Technology Academy at 3736 Perrin-Central #4 is scheduled to open for tenth through twelfth-grade students in January 2006. 

With approximately 200 million vehicles on the road, the demand for highly –skilled technicians is great.  By providing a state-of-the-art facility and a strong curriculum, the mission of the ATA is to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to pursue a post secondary education or begin a career in the automotive industry. 

ATA will be accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).  ATA will provide opportunities for all students to apply academics, with real hands on experiences.  Students may have up to a one year internship that applies toward their Automotive Service Excellent (ASE) certification. 

ATA students will have the opportunity to learn automotive brake systems, suspension systems, electrical and electronic systems, and engine diagnostics, among other skills.  The application process will begin in the fall of 2005, and interviews will begin in the spring of 2006.

Automotive Technician I& II

Tenth and eleventh grade students will take the first and second course in a pre-employment laboratory instructional sequence designed to provide job specific training for entry-level employment in the automotive engine repair and service career field.  Instruction emphasizes use of repair manuals, service and or repair of basic automotive components.  Instruction includes safety and career opportunities. 

 

Automotive Technician III

  This class is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to enter an internship within the automotive industry.  Seniors will be expected to prepare for and take the ASE certification tests in engine repair, steering and suspension, brake systems, and electrical.  Students will have the opportunity to receive college credit applied toward an Associate in Applied Arts and Science Degree through an articulation agreement or a certificate program in Automotive Technology. 

 

GOALS

The Automotive Technology Academy goals are to instill in each student:

* Reading skills.

 

Automotive Internship

This internship is designed to give students an opportunity to be mentored and supervised  by an ASE certified technician while working in the automotive industry.  Students will implement their knowledge and skills acquired from previous automotive courses.  This may be a paid or unpaid experience.
