North East ISD Fitnessgram

"Since 2006, North East ISD has focused on a 'Wellness in North East' initiative to promote healthy lifestyles for students, families and employees. At the same time, the Texas Legislature has also examined different methods to encourage student wellness. The District is expanding 'Wellness in North East' to incorporate a new state law [Senate Bill 530] designed to measure physical fitness of students in third through 12th grade." - Dr. Richard Middleton, January 2008 District Letter

"Obesity is an epidemic among Texas children. If we do not act now, a generation of young people will face diabetes and cardiovascular disease in their 20s and 30s, and that will be a public health disaster for Texas." - Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., MPH, Texas Commissioner of Health
