JOHNSON AND MADISON IN QUARTERFINALS

This past Friday found two North East schools playing in the same stadium on the same day with an opportunity to advance to the UIL quarterfinal round of the playoffs.  In some circles this game is referred to as the Regional Championship round but being in the round of eight remaining schools in their respective divisions also means you have reached the quarterfinals.

Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi was the site for last Friday’s games during the Thanksgiving week.  Madison took the field first against an undefeated Sharyland team and came away with a 45 to 21 victory.  The game was close until an interception by a Madison defensive player and subsequent return for a touchdown.  This gave the Mavericks a lead that they continued to hold for the rest of the contest.

In the second game Johnson went up against Laredo Alexander.  The Jaguars started with a touchdown on the opening kickoff.  After holding Alexander on their first possession the Jaguars scored on a long pass play on first down and took a quick 14 - 0 lead.  What appeared at the time to be an easy game turned into a battle and  exchange of points from that time forward.  Both teams made several big plays for the remainder of the game.  The Jaguars continued their strong playoff run and came away with a
56 - 41 victory.

Madison competing in the UIL Division One playoffs will play Judson on Friday at Heroes Stadium at 7:00 PM.  Johnson in UIL Division Two playoffs will take on Steele at Texas State on Saturday at 7:00 PM.  Ticket prices for each game will be a presale of $4 for students and $8 for adults.  All tickets sold on game day at the stadiums will be priced at $9.  Presale ticket sales begin on Tuesday at both Johnson and Madison.  Johnson sales will be at school from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM and Madison’s ticket sales  will be from 7:30 AM until 4:00 PM Tuesday. Both schools sell through Thursday.

Both the Jaguars and the Mavericks are at the top of their game.  Each school is among only eight remaining teams in their division of the UIL playoffs.  The Friday and Saturday games will match four very strong representatives of San Antonio 5A football.  Fans are encouraged to get your tickets early and to come ready for two days of outstanding high school football.  Congratulations to the Jaguar and Maverick players and coaches and best wishes in these UIL Quarterfinal contests.
