JOHNSON AND MADISON ADVANCE TO THE SEMIFINALS

This past weekend in playoff football games both Johnson and Madison came away with well earned and also very close victories in their quarter-final games.  All four teams in this round of the playoffs gave a good account of themselves and showed without question why they had reached the fourth round.

For the first time since the Division One and Division Two arrangement came into the UIL playoff system some 20 plus years ago North East ISD has a team in each division in the state semi-finals.  In both the Madison and Johnson game this past weekend the outcome was in doubt down to the final minute of play.

On Friday night Madison defeated Judson 33 - 29.  The score was 14 - 14 after the first half of play.  Judson took a 20 - 14 lead in the third quarter.  The Mavericks scored the go ahead touchdown and then the action got heated.  After falling behind again Madison took a four point lead with a minute to play.  Judson moved down the field aided by a fifteen yard penalty and had fourth and goal from the two yard line.  The Mavericks came up with their biggest stop of the year and took over at their six inch line.  It only took one play to run out the clock and Madison came away with the victory.  This places the Mavericks in the state semi-finals against Pearland on Saturday, December 14 at 3:00 PM in the Waco ISD stadium on the south side of Waco.

Saturday night brought an even closer contest as Johnson defeated Steele 42 - 41.  The Jaguars played nearly flawless football in the first half and went into intermission with a 28 - 14 lead.  After moving ahead 35 - 14 the Jags faced a talented Steele team that tied the score at 35 - 35.  Johnson took the final Knight kickoff and marched methodically down the field.  With about a minute to play Hunter Rittimann threw his fifth touchdown pass and Johnson led 42 - 35.  However, Steele scored and went with a two point conversion attempt.  The pass came up short and the Johnson Jaguars earned their first appearance in the state semi-finals.  The Jaguars play Katy on Saturday, December 14 at 4:00 PM in Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday at Madison and on Wednesday at Johnson.  Information on prices and timeline for purchasing tickets is post elsewhere on this website.

Congratulations to the Mavericks and Jaguars and their coaches for their fourth consecutive victory in the playoffs.  You have played well and refused to give in to the adversity that always comes in tight playoff games.  Best wishes this weekend as you look for a fifth playoff win and a trip to the state championships.
