FALL SPORT SUCCESS

The fall sports season in North East ISD brought much success to our teams and individual athletes.  In the second year of a seven team district 26-5A schedule that included only the North East high schools, we qualified four teams to the playoffs in both volleyball and football.  In team tennis two schools advanced to the regional tournament and in cross country there was both individual and team success.

Volleyball always begins our sports season each year.  There was considerable early season success and the district race concluded with Johnson winning the title.  Advancing to the playoff were Reagan, MacArthur and Churchill.  Both Johnson and Reagan marched through four playoff opponents to play each other in the finals of the Region IV Volleyball Tournament.  It is unusual to have two teams from the same district reach the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.  In a hard fought match, Johnson claimed the regional title and advanced to the state tournament for the first time.  The Lady Jaguars gave a great account of themselves in the state semifinals as they lost to the eventual state champion in five games.

Football season found our schools winning more than they lost.  Non district play concluded with an indication that the district race would be wide open.  At the conclusion of 26-5A play, Reagan had gone undefeated and claimed the district title.  Also qualifying for the playoff were Madison, Johnson and Churchill.  In bi-district play Reagan, Madison and Churchill recorded victories.  Johnson lost a hard fought contest to the state runner up in Division II of class 5A.  Madison’s victory was noteworthy in that they avenged an earlier loss by a significant margin.

Reagan representing Division II and Madison in Division I of the state playoff system both continued to the quarterfinals.  Reagan also lost to the eventual state runner up in the quarterfinal round.  In front of a packed house in Kingsville, Texas, Madison won an exciting contest and advanced to the semifinals.  It was an outstanding season for North East schools as we finish the year with a state semifinalist, a state quarterfinalist and a state area finalist.

Team tennis concluded its season of round robin play with a district tournament.  Reagan and Churchill were the top seeds in the district tournament and met each other in the championship match.  Churchill finished as the district champion and both teams advanced to the regional tournament.  In the regional tournament, both Reagan and Churchill advanced to the semifinals.

The cross country season found a lot of success for North East athletes.  In the district meet, which was highly competitive in both the girls and boys divisions, the Churchill girls won the district title as did the Reagan boys.  Also advancing to the regional meet were the girls’ teams from Johnson and Reagan and boys’ teams from Churchill and Johnson. Our teams performed well in the regional meet and possibly for the first time we had individual regional champions with Natalie Langan from Johnson and Daniel Vertiz from Reagan High School.  At the state meet Daniel Vertiz finished second to claim the silver medal.

The fall sports season has come to an end.  Congratulations are extended to our athletes and coaches for excellent performances.  We have now moved into our winter sports season which includes basketball, wrestling, swimming and soccer.
