information for students

Volleyball is into the third week of the season, football has completed one week of play, team tennis matches are already taking place, and we are preparing for the North East Invitational Cross Country meet this coming Saturday at Blossom Athletic Center.  Our teams have started off well in all sports.  A large number of North East students participate in our athletic programs.   Opportunities in the fall of the year for our students include the three team sports of volleyball, team tennis, and  football.   Cross country is both an individual and team sport and you will see that both individual and team champions are crowned each week in the various meets around the city.  Some early success in cross country has been with the Johnson girls winning the Southwest meet and the Reagan girls finishing third in the prestigious New Braunfels meet.  Emily Bandy from Johnson won the Southwest meet and Zach Martin from Reagan finished second in New Braunfels.

Without going into considerable detail I can tell you that our volleyball teams have been very successful in early tournaments.  Both Churchill and Reagan placed high in the Pearland Tournament which consists of some 72 schools from across the state.  Churchill won the North East tournament and Reagan finished third among the 24 entries.  This past weekend Lee won the San Antonio ISD Tournament, Churchill finished first in the Smithson Valley Tournament, and Reagan was the runner-up in the Leander Tourney.   District 26-5A play begins on Friday, September 13.  This morning’s San Antonio Express had Churchill #1 and Reagan #2 among all area volleyball teams.  Individuals who have distinguished themselves this past weekend in tournaments include all tournament selections for Abby Buckingham and Amy Nettles from Churchill and the same for Ashlie Reasor and Krista Kolbinskie from Reagan.

Six of the seven North East football teams opened the season with a victory this past weekend.  Madison went to Lehnhoff Stadium and defeated the number one ranked Steele Knights by a score of 46 – 45.  Churchill traveled to Farris Stadium and won over Clark 35 – 20.  Roosevelt opened the season on the road under new coach Matt Carroll and defeated Stevens 39 – 27 and MacArthur traveled to Gustafson Stadium and lost to Warren.  Our other road game found Reagan playing Wagner at Rutledge Stadium and coming away with a 49 – 25 victory.  Johnson hosted Harlingen and won by a score of 35 – 23 and Lee came back to defeat Marshall 17 – 16.  This morning’s San Antonio Express had Madison #1, Reagan #6, Churchill #9, and Roosevelt #10 among all area football teams.  Individual honors as player of the week went to Cody Ennis of Madison for offense and to Deja Morrow of Churchill for defense.  This week will find games at each stadium on both Friday and Saturday nights.  The athletic department expresses its appreciation to the teams, the bands, the cheerleaders, the dance teams, and the pep squads for a great opening week.

For a complete schedule of all North East athletic events including varsity, subvarsity, and middle school fall sports go to Sports Schedules on the athletic department website.  You will also find a stadium schedule for varsity football games at both Comalander and Heroes Stadiums under Fall Sports/Football.  North East student athletes and teams are among the best in the state.  We are appreciative of the support of each community of these young people and encourage you to come out and “catch the spirit” of your school.
