Enjoying the game of soccer has turned out to be quite rewarding for the Soccer Club students at West Avenue Elementary School. A handful of the students were greeted by the Better State Crew in the school library on May 29 for a special surprise. The crew awarded the team free tickets to attend the San Antonio Scorpions game as they battle the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on June 7.

The Soccer Club is coordinated by Francisco Delgado, assistant principal, and Joycelyn Abram, instruction assistant at the campus. Approximately 35 kids, third through fifth grade, meet after school every Friday and learn a lot of the same skills they would learn in little league soccer, but for free.

“The students get the chance to work on their soccer skills,” said Delgado. “They also learn how to be a team player, gain social skills and get motivation to do well in the classroom.”

The special donation was coordinated by Kristen Latronico-Limon, counselor at the school. After getting in touch with the Scorpions, she was directed to the Better State Crew, a State Farm program that just started in the San Antonio area back in April of this year. Better State Crew representatives, Priscilla Garcia and Melissa Moreno, along with local State Farm agent, Anahi Pineda, handed the students Scorpions drawstring backpacks and novelty water bottles to go with their game tickets.

Victor Saldana, principal, was on hand to thank State Farm for their contribution to the great kids involved in the Soccer Club.
