Ed White Middle School brought together students from various backgrounds and peer groups on Friday, November 16, 2007 for the annual Unity Conference. Students received the opportunity to participate in activities that promote and teach tolerance. One activity involved headbands marked with stereotypical social labels (e.g. Jock). Leaders placed the headbands on the students' heads so that they did not know what was written. Students, as well as Principal Rick Canales (shown in picture), then treated each other according to the label. The school hoped students would gain an understanding of how stereotypes affect others.
