During the week of March 20, Serna Elementary School celebrated its Second Annual Camp Write Along. The camp is designed for fourth grade students who are preparing for the STAAR Writing test. The theme for Serna’s Camp Write Along this year was Star Wars.
Camp Write Along is a beneficial experience for fourth graders as it gives them the opportunity to learn in a small, engaging group setting. Some of the rotations students went through included: Leading Us Through Space (Introductions), The Final Descent (Conclusion), Transition Trench, and Rogue Revising, just to name a few. This unique experience gave the children an extra push in utilizing and working though the writing process in the weeks leading up to STAAR.
The students loved the experience of Camp Write Along. One student even said, “Camp Write Along was the coolest thing I’ve ever done at school!” During camp, Serna students not only worked on fine tuning their writing skills, they also learned camp songs such as, “Write, Write, Baby” (performed to the tune of Ice, Ice, Baby), and “Camp Write Along” (performed to the tune of YMCA). “It was so much fun seeing all the kids smiling and singing along to the songs! I have been looking forward to Camp Write Along all year!” said Ms. Delaunay, a fourth grade teacher.
Serna teachers and students hope that the tradition of Camp Write Along continues for many years to come!
