Huebner Headed to global competition
The 2013-2014 Destination Imagination Team
The students at Huebner Elementary School are excited about their fourth year taking part in the Destination Imagination competition. Destination Imagination is an organization where students learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Students solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments.
The team has been working hard since October to prepare their challenge that they presented at the regional competition on March 1. The group of students had to select a piece of art created by an artist who was born in a nation other than the US. They had to write a story to theatrically perform in a comic strip format, and had to create a "Caption Contraption" to make the captions appear. Finally, they had to create an "ARTifact" that is inspired by the work of art they selected.
Team members have to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the challenges. Students who participate do not just use basic knowledge and skills; they learn to let their imagination run wild and take unique approaches to problem solving.
After a lot of team work, problem solving, and creativity, the students earned second place at the regional competition in New Braunfels. This advanced them onto the state competition in Pflugerville, TX on April 12. Once again, the team had an outstanding performance and took third place out of 20 teams at the state level. The group of fourth and fifth graders were able to earn a spot at the next level of competition, Global Finals. The team will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee in May, along with about 1,300 teams from 14 countries.
The Huebner Elementary School Destination Imagination team is thrilled about the opportunity to not only represent their school, district, city, and state at the Global Finals, but also to represent their very own country!
