On Feb. 19, students and staff members at Ed White Middle School were thrilled to be in the presence of a two-time Olympian Leonel "Leo" Manzano. He contacted Ed White officials requesting to come and visit with the students. He has two cousins enrolled at Ed White.
Manzano participated in the 2008 Beijing and the London 2012 Summer Olympics where he earned a Silver medal in the 1500 meter run. Manzano shared his life struggles and triumphs with the seventh and eigth grade athletics classes.
The timing was perfect since the students are now gearing up for track season. The students were in awe as Manzano passed around his Silver medal from the London Olympics for everyone to see. The students were so excited they all made sure to "rub" the Silver medal for good luck.
Manzano is currently in training for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but he promised the students he will come back and visit before the end of the school year. One thing for sure, he has a new fan club at Ed White Middle School.
