After fall success, looking forward to spring tournaments
Numbering 20 members at the start of its third year, the Reagan High School Quiz Bowl team had a number of successes this fall. At an early tournament in Austin, a JV squad of four placed second. At the Alamo City Classic hosted by Trinity University, four Reagan teams turned in an excellent performance. The three experienced squads had a perfect combined 18 – 0 record at the end of the preliminary rounds and were seeded 1st, 3rd, and 4th for the elimination brackets.
The Reagan Black team won the tournament with a perfect 10-0 record and a tournament high 435.5 points per game. The Silver team finished 3rd with an 8 and 1 record and a tournament total of 351.1 points per game, the third highest average of any team. The Silver team lost to Keystone in the semifinals round. Reagan Green finished with the second highest points per game total of the tournament, 355, and a record of 7 and 1. The novice team when 3 and 3, making it into the finals, but lost to the Reagan Silver team in the second round, finishing 15th out of 27 teams.
At the freshman tournament, four new members of the Reagan team made a run for the top finish, but lost in the finals to an undefeated team from St. Dominic Savio.
In addition to preparing for their own competitions, team members have worked with both Bush and Lopez Middle Schools to get teams started there. At the first competition, the Bush team finished 1st among 10 San Antonio teams, but lost to an experienced middle school squad from Austin. Lopez finished 4th with the third highest points per game total. In December, Bush went a perfect 9-0 to win the HoHoHo tournament hosted by Reagan and two Lopez teams finished 3rd and 4th.
Reagan will participate in a couple of state wide contest this Spring in addition to the State championship in April. Also, three teams have qualified for the nationals and Reagan plans to send two to Chicago in late May to compete.
