Steubing Ranch welcomes the San Antonio Scorpions

STAAR Pep Rally

Jonathan Borrajo, a defender on the Scorpions team, speaks to the students about preparing for the test.

Steubing Ranch Elementary School fifth grade students enjoyed a fun-filled STAAR Pep Rally, featuring members of the San Antonio Scorpions Soccer Team on June 23. Scorpions players, Billy Forbes, Jonathan Borrajo and Julius James, along with the team’s account executive, Rodrick Clarke, gave plenty of words of encouragement. Students are preparing to take the third administration of the STAAR exam tomorrow.

The message of the day was simple—no excuses. The Scorpions are considered an International team, with Rodrick Clarke from Jamaica, Billy Forbes from the Turks & Caicos’ Islands and Julius James from Trinidad and Tobago. The special guests explained that growing up, they didn’t have the same technology or learning resources to pass that the students have now. The students’ voices reverberated throughout the cafeteria as Rodrick Clarke had the group chant, “No Excuses!”

Students enjoyed the raffle as players gave out
the lucky numbers.

“Study for at least 20 minutes a day, then you can go play,” said Billy Forbes, who played at Lubbock Christian University. “For me, growing up, I knew I had to come to the United States to play. So what I had to do was study, go to church and play lots of soccer. Your dream might be coming soon so you have to study hard, listen to your teachers and parents, and I’m sure you will do great on the test.”

The students enjoyed the raffle portion of the pep rally, as they anxiously waited to hear their number announced by the players. Winners received autographed memorabilia and cheers from their fellow classmates.

Chris Specia, summer school principal, Ashley Preston, assistant principal, and Adriana Rivera, family specialist, were on hand to coordinate the pep rally, along with fellow staff members.
