west avenue student named Texas citizen of the year

West Avenue Elementary School first-grade student Jasiah Rubalcava was named Texas Citizen of the Year at the State EMS Conference in Austin on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012.

Jasiah was nominated by Acadian Ambulance Company. Last year, Jasiah came to the rescue of another student when the student began choking on a chip during lunch in the cafeteria. Jasiah immediately began doing the Heimlich maneuver when he saw his friend choking. Jasiah said he learned this technique from television.

Jasiah's brave action has been acknowledged with a NEISD Superintendent's Award, Acadian Good Samaritan Award, an appearance on Good Day SA, and a visit with the San Antonio Fire Department.
