West Avenue students take part in first Academic Decathlon
Third through fifth grade students at West Avenue Elementary School got together to celebrate their learning by participating in the school's first Academic Decathlon, an event they hope becomes an annual tradition. Each student was given a short qualifying exam to determine if they made the team. The students were tested in the subjects of math, reading, science, wellness/music, and pop culture. The top student from each 3 - 5 grade class was selected.
The students were then broken up into two teams the red and white. During a campus-wide assembly, the two teams were challenged to an academic competition. The white team prevailed.
"This event was another way we motivate our students to expand their thinking and acknowledge students with high academic achievement at West Avenue Elementary," said Belinda Gonzalez, principal.
