DATE: Nov. 14
TIME: 6:30 pm
LOCATION: Tejeda MS, 2909 E. Evans Rd

Tejeda Middle School Theatre will present its first production of the 2011-2012 season in the style of Dessert Theatre. They will perform "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon - adapted into a children’s play by Tejeda Theatre Director Veronica Peña-Montalvo - on Nov. 14 in the Cafetorium. Dessert will be served from 6:30-6:55 p.m. and the play will begin at 7 p.m.

Camilla Cream knows two things for sure: Admitting she likes lima beans isn't the best way to start a new school year, and neither is going to school when you're covered in stripes. Theatre teacher Veronica Pena-Montalvo takes the children’s book and uses it as a vehicle that explores what it means to be different. Discover how Camilla overcomes her obstacles by being herself.

Students enrolled in the Theatre Advanced class have been developing the short story into a one act play. Through improvisation, character exploration, and plot development exercises, Mrs. Peña-Montalvo has been able to create a script with depth, light comedy and a story that everyone can relate to. The design team of students is faced with the task of creating multiple costumes for the ever-changing Camilla, while the set designers have been busy painting Camilla’s bedroom, which will eventually become Camilla herself.

“This play really tests our creativity and imagination as we are creating the visual elements from scratch. We are using three different actresses to play Camilla, and we’ve designed costumes and make-up that will really show the extent of her transformations,” said Donna Pennington, 8th grade student and production Costume Head.

“The play is funny and tells a story of a girl who is so concerned about fitting in that she ultimately learns a hard lesson. It is also a wonderful way to show kids how important it is to be yourself,” said Brittany Montaya, playing one of the three Camilla Creams.

Adult admission is $7. Student admission is $5. Reserved tickets must be purchased in advance by visiting the box office at Tejeda Middle School. There will be table seating. Desserts will be provided by My Babycakes, A Yummy Allergen-Free Bakery.
