University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) research scientist Irene Chapa, Ph.D. visited Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy Biomedical Science students on Oct. 25, 2011.
Dr. Chapa discussed the various student opportunities that the UTHSCSA offers for summer research and internships, such as the Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy Scholars Program.
"The Biomedical Science program at Lee High School provides STEM students a chance to learn a wide variety of science skills and techniques used in the research field," said Robin Howard, teacher. "The presentation illustrated some of those techniques, giving my students the connection between the things they are learning in biomed and how they can be used in real research labs at UTHSCSA."
The Voelcker Academy is a three-year program. In year one, students participate in an immersive, hands-on, summer research program, filled with labs, special classes, field trips and mentorship. In years two and three, distinguished UTHSCSA scientists will serve as the students’ mentors, guiding the students in the development of individual research projects in specific research laboratories. At the end of each summer, each scholar receives a monetary stipend award for their efforts.
