Nimitz, MacArthur students knit caps for cancer patients

Nimitz students knit caps for cancer patients

Students in the Nimitz Middle School S.O.S. (Students Offering Service) service-learning program are organizing a project to knit and crochet caps for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In order for this to happen they are asking for help from the community by donating supplies. This includes knitting needles, crocheting hooks and yarn. Supplies can be dropped off at the Nimitz Middle School Main Office, 5426 Blanco Road. Donations will be accepted throughout the winter months.

Approximately, 20 students with a handful of teachers are organizing this project and some are learning to knit as they go. They plan to spend the next three months creating as many caps as possible – they would like to be able to donate at least 100 caps.

“One of our student’s mother is a cancer survivor and each of us has our own personal story for wanting to do this,” said Mary Stewart, Nimitz teacher. “For me, it’s in memory of our wonderful NEISD colleague and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teacher, Mindy Lanoux, who lost her battle with Stage 4 cancer in September 2011. I taught her son two years ago in STEM and work with her husband, who also teaches within STEM. We also have a student this year whose mother is fighting a battle against cancer. So this is personal for many of us.”
