nimitz hosts event for America recycles day
Students Offering Service (S.O.S), a community service organization at Nimitz Middle School, held a special event Nov. 15 for America Recycles Day. The purpose of the event was to encourage the community to recycle, bring awareness to unusual items that can be recycled, as well as educate about the danger of not recycling materials with toxic chemicals like old iPods, cell phones and batteries. Many of these get thrown away every day without the knowledge that the chemicals used to make these items can leach into the soil and possibly get into our groundwater.
At the event, members of the organization were in charge of games, crafts and a tie dye station. Games included homemade angry birds, bean bag toss, trashketball, recycle relay, and more. All games were made using recyclable or reusable materials.
The crafts station included puzzle piece picture frames using old puzzles, envelopes made from old calendars, and bookmarks made from old paint splotches. The event catered to all students and families from the community and was met with great success. S.O.S is already looking forward to next year.
