NESA students attend Austin Film Fest
As part of the Young Filmmakers Program, 15 North East School of the Arts (NESA) cinema students, along with two chaperones, took the opportunity to attend the 18th Annual Austin FIlm Festival. In addition, several NESA cinema students competed in the festival. Senior student director Maggie Richardson advanced to the finals.
"The Austin Film Festival gives students insight into the entertainment business," said Konise Milender, NESA film teacher. "It helps to prepare them for their future by giving them access to hundreds of filmmakers and career ideas. They also gain more confidence after spending a weekend talking to seasoned writers, directors and producers who treat the students as equals. No matter our age, at Austin Film Festival we are all artists--we are all filmmakers."
Richardson's film screened Sunday, Oct. 23 to a packed crowd in Austin at the Hideout Theater. The film will screen again on Thursday, Oct. 27. The crowd was very receptive, and Richardson was interviewed by a moderator on stage as part of the Q&A session.
Students attended panels, workshops and round tables with various film artists, such as writer/producer Jeff Lowell ("The Drew Carey Show," "Just Shoot Me"), writer/producer Terry Rossio ("Shrek," "Pirates of the Caribbean"), creative development producer Mary Coleman (Pixar), and writer Sterling Anderson (Medium, The Unit). Students also met and/or saw actors, such as Nickelodeon cast members, Johnny Depp, and more.
