students awarded in journalism competition

North East ISD students competed at the Texas Association of Journalism Educators state wide competition October 17-19 at the Gunter hotel.

Assistant convention directors Sue Jett, journalism teacher at Churchill and Brenda Slatton, journalism teacher at Lee began planning the event over the summer and hosted 800 attendees for the competition and convention.

Students attended the three-day conference and participated in on-site contests, workshops with top writers, photographers, and designers from across the state and nation, and attended the key-note address given by author and television journalist, Al Thompkins of the Poynter Institute.

More than 850 students from across the state attended the conference and had the opportunity to compete in 21 contests in writing, design and photography. The following students placed.

Reagan High School

  • Sophomore Annie Maropis won an award of Excellence in Basic Yearbook Design
  • Senior Olivia Visio won an award of Excellence in Review Writing
  • Senior Shannon Snyder won an award of Excellence in Photo Illustration
  • Senior Alyssa Franklin won an award of Excellence in On-Site Photography/Open
