NEISD students dominate Scholastic Art Awards

The Scholastic Art Awards identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic talent and brings their work to a national audience. The awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents and provides teens in grades 7 through 12 an opportunity for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited at the regional as well as the national level. Students who win at the regional level are celebrated at local ceremonies and have their work showcased in exhibitions. National Medallists are celebrated at a prestigious Carnegie Hall ceremony and have their work showcased in reputable galleries in New York City. Thirty-three artworks from NEISD students will advance for consideration for national-level recognition.

"This year, NEISD art students more than doubled the number of entries accepted for the regional level of this program. In fact, 55 percent of the regional entries from NEISD students," said Gloria Hill, director of visual art and elementary music. "This is an important opportunity for students for their college resume, as this program is a highly recognized national event."

The opening of the Scholastic Art exhibit and awards ceremony will be held Friday, January 13, from 6 - 9 p.m. at Say Si (1518 South Alamo). Artworks receiving a Gold Key will be sent to New York for judging at the National level.

Regional Award Levels

The highest level of achievement on the regional level. Approximately 7 – 10 percent of all regional submissions are recognized with Gold Key Awards and all are considered for national-level recognition.
  • Silver Key
Approximately 10 – 15 percent of all regional submissions are recognized with Silver Key Awards.
  • Honorable Mention
This Award recognizes students with artistic potential. Approximately 15 – 20 percent of all regional submissions receive Honorable Mention Awards.
  • American Visions & Voices Nominees:
Five works are selected out of all Gold Key works (across categories) as the "Best of Show" for each region.

Scholastic Art and Writing judges selected only 400 artworks from thousands of entries in our region to receive awards. Of the 400 winners, 173 artworks are from NEISD students. NEISD took three of the top five artworks selected for the American Visions & Voices.
