Board names Dr. Brian Gottardy Superintendent
Interim Superintendent Dr. Brian G. Gottardy was named North East Independent School District Superintendent of Schools Monday night by the Board of Trustees.
Before being named Superintendent, Dr. Gottardy held the position of Associate Superintendent for Business Services and Operations. Gottardy was named Interim Superintendent in late February when the former superintendent announced his retirement. Gottardy’s interim duties became effective May 2.
Gottardy takes the reins of the second largest school district in Bexar County and the 8th largest school district in Texas. During the transition, Dr. Gottardy took on a myriad of responsibilities during the busiest time of the school year. The school district was placed in the very difficult position of making up to $70 million worth of cuts over the next two years due to the state’s budget crisis. Dr. Gottardy, along with the NEISD Board of Trustees, held several budget hearings working countless hours to develop a plan that would give the district the necessary reductions without losing the probationary contract teachers and channeling resources into the classroom.
Additionally, the veteran associate superintendent for instruction left in June to take a similar position with Houston ISD and the Executive Director for Finance announced his retirement effective June 1. Dr. Gottardy was tasked with replacing those positions as well as naming an Interim Associate Superintendent for Operations to replace his position. With an almost entirely new Executive Staff Dr. Gottardy led eight convocations, speaking to all faculty and staff members in each cluster, presenting his vision and goals, and stating the importance of a 360-degree Education.
Dr. Gottardy, district staff and the Bond Planning Committee members took time this past spring to discuss bond projects and develop a proposal to present to the Board. The group met recently on August 17 to again discuss projects and the potential for a future bond election. On Wednesday, the NEISD Board of Trustees will discuss the 2011 Bond Proposal, and decide whether to pursue a Bond Election this November.
The superintendent, as chief executive officer (CEO), is accountable to the Board of Trustees, which expects the CEO to be the education leader of North East Independent School District. The superintendent/CEO works closely with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement policies and programs designed to carry out the district's mission.
In concert with the staff, students, and the community, the Board of Trustees has identified certain characteristics and qualifications as highly desirable in a superintendent/CEO. Dr. Brian Gottardy meets and exceeds those expectations.
