NEISD takes steps to help prevent mosquitoes, West Nile Virus

The health and safety of all NEISD students and staff members is always a top priority for the district. NEISD staff is continually monitoring the West Nile Virus situation, and the Health Services department developed tips for students and staff:

  • Encourage parents to apply a repellent (containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus) of their choice on their child PRIOR to sending to school
  • Apply permethrin to clothes ONLY
  • Avoid being outside at dusk and dawn
  • Dress in long sleeves and long pants when outside
  • For after school extracurricular activities:
    • Encourage use of repellent
    • Wear clothes that cover extremities

The Maintenance Department has begun the process of spraying bushes and applying light brown donut shaped disks to standing water areas. The chemical treatment is considered non hazardous or non toxic and safe for the environment. We encourage everyone to be vigilant and report standing water areas to the Facility Maintenance Support department by calling (210) 657-8842. The treatment of drainage or creek bed areas adjacent to the campus fence lines should be reported to the Metro Health Department by calling 311.
