Olmos Elementary School fifth-graders will participate in NEISD's Environmental Outdoor Education program at John Knox Ranch during the week of Oct. 26.

John Knox Ranch is located in the Hill Country, six miles away from Wimberley. It covers more than 300 acres and lies on the banks of the Blanco River.

Students will spend three days and two nights learning about the natural environment of the area. The students will learn about native grasses and mammals as well as how to survey an area for deer droppings to determine how many deer are in the local population.

They will also learn about plant and animal adaptations that allow them to survive in the environment. All activities are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

"The students had a great time last year and talked about the experience for weeks," said Michaele Pansza, assistant principal.
