Extreme heat! NEISD students stay cool
The extreme heat in San Antonio can become a problem when students, coaches/instructors are outside practicing and preparing for the new school year. School has not yet begun, but students involved in organizations such as band, football, dance/cheer, and JROTC are gearing up for the fall season.
North East ISD administrators are keeping tabs on the weather and providing staff with hot weather precautions, heat index charts, and instructions for heat relief to keep students cool.
“Taking care of students’ health especially during these extreme temperatures is a top priority at NEISD,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Gottardy.
Staff has been instructed to keep practice schedules flexible due to the heat and also acclimate students to the weather by providing ice and extra water. They will also keep a close look at students and maintain eye contact with those who may appear “out of condition” or who are not sweating, all in order to avoid any overheating issues.
Students are also being instructed on proper hydration throughout the day and evening in preparation for a practice session – because prior preparation can help prevent dehydration during practices.
