NEISD music programs win national honors

The Johnson High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Jarrett Lipman and Alan Sharps; the Lopez Middle School Honors Band, under the direction of Mr. Andy Post; and the Lopez Orchestra, under the direction of Melanie Sorgi and Kim Garza were all named a “Commended Winner” in the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band and National Orchestra Honors Competition.

There were 161 outstanding entries this year among band, choir, orchestra, jazz, and percussion ensemble, and the project has now received entries from 32 different states. The competition was by recording--each group sent in a recording to be judged over the summer.

“This simply indicates that NEISD has a great tradition of quality music ensembles and that our programs continue to rank among the best in the country,” said Mark Chambers, when asked how this achievement reflects on the caliber of the NEISD music program.

The adjudication was anonymous, and the adjudicators were: Steve Peterson from Ithaca College; John Whitwell, Director of Bands Emeritus, Michigan State University; and Frank Wickes, Lousiana State University.

The competitions are hosted by the Foundation for Music Education. Dick Clardy, Executive Director of the Foundation for Music Education said, “The North East ISD musical groups are wonderful examples for programs everywhere, and a credit to the exemplary music program in your district.”
