NEISD honored at White House reception
North East ISD was represented at a White House reception on October 17 for the district’s success in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). The reception was hosted by Mrs. Michelle Obama on the South Lawn and honored school districts’ efforts in childhood-obesity prevention.
School Nutrition Services Executive Director Meg Domas and Nutrition Ed/Wellness Coordinator Katie Mahoney attended, as well representatives from Woodstone, Huebner, Wilshire, Hidden Forest and Stone Oak elementary schools.
NEISD participated in the HUSSC, and 18 schools were recognized as certified award-winning for creating environments that support healthy eating and physical activity choices. The HUSSC encouraged schools throughout the country to take a leadership role in helping students make healthier eating and physical activity choices that will last a lifetime.
All of these schools have 1) served school lunches that reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans; 2) restricted the availability of foods and beverages at school to those that meet healthier guidelines of lower fat, added sugars, and sodium; 3) offered nutrition education for students to learn to make healthy choices; 4) provided physical education and opportunities for students to be physically active during the school day; and 5) have a school wellness policy.
The following elementary schools earned the HUSSC distinction: Camelot, Canyon Ridge, Castle Hills, Clear Spring, Colonial Hills, El Dorado, Hidden Forest, Huebner, Larkspur, Longs Creek, Oak Grove, Oak Meadow, Royal Ridge, Stone Oak, Walzem, Wetmore, Wilshire, and Woodstone.
