Madison maverick bowling takes on the best

At the Texas High School Bowling Club State Championship on March 24-25, the Madison High School boys and girls bowling teams were tough opponents, with the boys placing third and the girls placing second among the best in the state.

Sporting orange and blue tie dye T-shirts, the Lady Mavericks of Madison High School had a great tournament, bringing home the 2013 Texas High School Girls State Team Runner-Up trophy. The Lady Mavericks, 2008 state champions, reached the final as the #5 seed and topped 3-time champion Allen in the round of 16 (172-141, 206-183). In the quarterfinals, they defeated #13 Boswell (147-131, 188-125) and then took out #16 Katy (177-170, 193-136) in the semifinal, losing to the McKinney Boyd Lady Broncos in the finals. Jeanette Van Gundy rolled the high game of the tournament with 279.

The Madison Mavericks boys team defeated Copperas Cove in the round of 16 (245-224), but had a tough loss against The Colony in the quarterfinals (203-214, 201-215). The Mavericks earned 3rd place in Region VII. Chris Cockrill of Madison earned one of the highest individual totals in the tournament with 728.

Jeanette Van Gundy competed in the girl’s singles tournament and advanced to the top 8 out of 65. Dylan Brown and Chris Cockrill competed in the boy’s singles tournament and Dylan advanced to the top 4 out of 65.

This makes the sixth consecutive year that Madison has had a team or an individual in the state championship match, winning three state championships and three state runner up’s since 2008.

“We consider [Madison] one of the powerhouse programs in the state,” said Dick Atkinson, state coordinator for Texas High School Bowling Club (THSBC), and it looks like he definitely has a point.

Madison Maverick Bowling is led by coaches: Paul Smith, Chuck Jackola, Mike Phillips, Terry Deppe, Herb Van Gundy and School Sponsor/Representative Edward Coleman.
