The Parade's Creative Director Wesley Whatley visited Churchill High School on Monday, April 15 for what students believed was a site check.

He announced that it was not a regular part of the application process, but a surprise announcement that the band had been selected to participate in the 2014 parade.

The Churchill band members, students from Bradley, Jackson, and Eisenhower middle schools, and some parents were there for the announcement. Because the event is more than a year away, the middle school students will be high school band members going on the trip.

"Oh my gosh! I get to go to New York for Thanksgiving!" said Franki Gay, Churchill sophomore band member.

Students watched video messages from Mayor Julian Castro and Governor Rick Perry congratulating the students. Both said they were proud Churchill will represent San Antonio and Texas.

Churchill Band Director Brian Pollard said they will start working on their fund raising plans and get started in the next 60 days.
