MacArthur presents "Guys and Dolls"
Jan. 24 - 26
LOCATION: MacArthur High School, Auditorium, 2923 MacArthur View
MacArthur High School will present "Guys and Dolls" Jan. 24 - 26 at 7 p.m., and a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Jan 26. Performances will be held in the school's Brady Memorial Auditorium, and tickets are $8 for general admission. Middle school students will be admitted for $5 if they are wearing their middle school shirts. Jackson Grosskopf, First Chair Bass 1 for the Texas All-State choir, will play Nathan Detroit. Jackson has won First Chair at the last six competitions over the last two years. He debuted in MacArthur musicals during his 7th grade year at Driscoll MS when he played Tiny Tim in the 2007 production of "A Christmas Carol."
The "Guys and Dolls" All Star cast also includes Morgan Handley who will play Sarah Brown. Morgan has also found success in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State process, as well as in UIL Solo & Ensemble contests. Shaquille Melendez, playing Sky Masterson, was previously featured as the Ghost of Christmas Past in the 2011 production of "A Christmas Carol."
"He brings a potent tenor sound to our stage," said Matthew Woodward, choir director
Miss Adelaide, the adorable show girl, will be played by Kalen Ahart. Kalen has been featured in the annual Choir Pop Show, as well as Mac Idol.
"She leads her fellow Hot Box Dancers with comedy and style," said Woodward.
All four of these students are seniors, members of the MacArthur Concert Chorale, and members of PFC, the internationally acclaimed a cappella group.
"With these four leading the cast, this show will debut on Thursday night with power, comedy, and beautiful singing," said Woodward.
"Guys and Dolls" is set on Broadway in New York City in the mid 1950’s. The gangsters, crapshooters, and show girls have taken over the town thanks to Nathan Detroit, the leader of the oldest and best floating crap game in town. Miss Adelaide is the star of the Hot Box nightclub, and has been engaged to Nathan for 14 years. As the new big name in town, Sky Masterson, a gambler whose reputation precedes him, finds himself in a bet with Nathan to take a girl of Nathan’s choosing to Cuba for a night. True to form, Nathan pulls a trick on Sky and selects Sarah Brown, the leader of the Save-A-Soul Mission and member of the Salvation Army. By the end of the show, a few folks get married, a few souls get saved, and everyone learns that when a guy is truly in love, he will do anything for his doll.
