Mac cheer team recognized at Any Baby Can event

The MacArthur High School Cheer team was recognized on June 27 at the annual Any Baby Can “Adopt a Doll Luncheon” at The Historic Menger Hotel, for raising $1000 to support the needs of critically and chronically ill children served by the nonprofit organization. The team collected donations in over-sized baby bottles during the school year, and in return received a life size replica of this year’s model child Rihanna Aceveda.

The girls first met Rihanna, along with hundreds of other children with special needs, while performing at the Any Baby Can Christmas Party in December. Rihanna has a rare, serious immune-deficiency disease and continues to receive rigorous experimental plasma treatments.

The Mac Cheer effort is part of a year-long campaign entitled Mac Cheers EVERY Child. The team has also participated in a walk for children with heart disease, the Elf Louise Christmas project, and a performance at Morgan’s Wonderland.

MacArthur Cheer Coach Shay Tondre said “I am very proud of the girls for their skills and cheer performances, but even more so for the good example they set for others and their giving spirit”.

School principal Pete Martinez noted that the Rihanna doll will be proudly placed in the lobby of the school, along with other trophies.
