las lomas principal surprised with award
On Dec. 6, Las Lomas Principal Alan Rochkus was serenaded by students and surprised by school staff with the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Distinguished Administrator Award.
During a PTA meeting and before a student strings and choir concert, students sang “We Appreciate You” and the school song and dedicated them to Rochkus. Following this,NEISD Director of Visual Art and Elementary Music Gloria Hill took the stage to surprise Rochkus with the award presentation.
He was nominated for this award by a member of his staff. Rochkus has always been a strong advocate for music education. He promotes the importance of music in the instructional process to parents, staff and students. He encourages and supports unique experiences for students like attending the symphony and performing at the state capital. He also champions after-school programs, such as a strings and drama club, among many other things.
TMEA is an organization of more than 10,000 school music educators dedicated to promoting excellence in music education. It recognizes upper-level school administrators (e.g., superintendents, deputy superintendents, principals) across the state who have been instrumental in preserving quality music education programs on their campuses and in their districts.
