Krueger students take advantage of smartphone market

The Android mobile operating system is taking the smartphone market by storm, and students in Josh Beck's advanced programming class at Krueger Middle School are poised to take advantage of this growing market.

Although the development environment for this mobile platform can be installed and utilized by anyone for free on Apple, Linux, or Windows, the students in this class have spent the first semester demonstrating basic competence with Linux and are now moving forward to develop working applications that can be sold through the Google Android market, which is available on most Android devices -- commanding 20 percent of the smartphone market worldwide.

Krueger has purchased three smart phones for the class so that these students can test their applications on production model devices before offering them up for sale or download on the Android market. These phones include GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G capability, accelerometer, compass, bluetooth, and a working touch screen with all the functionality users expect from mobile smartphones in today's market.
