KIN Robotics Club prepares for competition

The City of San Antonio has provided math and science initiative funds that will help prepare students to be more successful not only in testing performance but also in gaining critical 21st Century skills. The KIN After School Challenge programs are implementing robotics clubs through this initiative at the following KIN sites: Camelot, Colonial Hills, Dellview, East Terrell Hills, Larkspur, Olmos, Ridgeview, Serna, West Avenue, Walzem and Wilshire.

Fourth and fifth grade students who have demonstrated responsibility and excellent behavior have been selected to participate in the Kin Robotics Club. The robotics clubs will meet on a weekly basis and will allow students an opportunity to build and program robots using the LEGO®MINDSTORMS® kits. Students will work with a large assortment of parts including sensors, converter cables and motors, in order to build programmable robots.

Each team will determine the purpose of their robot and list tasks to follow in its construction and will also design an obstacle course. Robots will be tested and students will record their findings in an engineering journal. Students will compete among their teams and the winner from each site will move on to a district-wide KIN Robotics Competition in May 2012.
