Johnson band to perform in 2014 Rose Parade
The award winning Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson High School Band has been selected to participate in the 125th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA, on January 1, 2014. Under the direction of Jarrett Lipman, Alan Sharps, Manuel Maldonado and Darryl Pemberton, the band has developed a reputation for quality, innovation and excitement. Selected from hundreds of high schools, the Johnson band is one of approximately 12 high school bands invited to participate in the Rose Parade.
"Our band will be viewed by millions of viewers in over 100 countries, the largest audience they will ever experience," said Lipman, band director. "It is truly an honor to be selected."
The Johnson Band received enthusiastic support to apply for the Rose Parade from many in the marching arts community following its successful performances at the 2011 Bands of America Grand National Championships. The application process took 5 months and with the support of Johnson Principal John Mehlbrech and Journalism Advisor Velisa Jewett, an amazing book of photos, accomplishments, letters of recommendations and DVD were submitted in May 2012. Lipman received the good news at the end of September that the band was selected to participate in the 2014 New Year’s Day celebration.
Established in August of 2008, the newest high school in the North East School District, the Johnson Band has quickly established itself as one of the premier bands in the country. The program has grown to over 200 and has received state and national recognition, including selection to the Texas UIL State Marching Band competition in 2010 and 2012, Bands of America Grand National Finalist, eighth place in 2011 and most recently the Wind Ensemble was named 5th in the State of Texas in the Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band Competition.
The Johnson Band looks forward to representing the San Antonio Community, and the State of Texas as a whole, in Pasadena in 2014. The band kicks-off its’ fundraising drive in December and hopes the San Antonio Community will come together to help with fundraising efforts.
