Johnson Wind Ensemble places 5th in state

The Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Varsity Wind Ensemble was named a TMEA State Honor Band Finalist on Friday July 20 at the TMEA State Honor Band Contest held at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center as a part of the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention.  The Johnson Wind Ensemble finished fifth overall out of the 14 bands who advanced to the state round, selected from the seven Areas during the contests in June, an NEISD Record for the 5A High School Honor Band Contest. Johnson placed first in the Area E 5A Honor Band Contest, held on June 21, earning it a position in the State Contest for the first time in the school's history.

It is an incredible accomplishment for any band to advance to state, and to earn a position in the top half of the contest places the band in the company of some of the finest high school wind ensembles in the United States.

"The success of the Johnson Wind Ensemble as only a four-year-old group is a testament to the hard work of the band members and staff, the dedicated instruction and training from the directors at our middle school feeders, the patience and love of our band parents, and the unending support of the arts by the administrations at Johnson High School and the North East Independent School District," said Jarrett Lipman, director of bands at Johnson. "We are incredibly proud of the band members and hope the final outcome serves as a great lesson in the success one can achieve through hard work and relentless commitment to achieving ones goals."

The TMEA Honor Band Competition occurs every other year for the 5A/3A/1A High Schools, with 4A/2A High Schools on the other year. Band programs from around the state submit recordings of some of three selections from their Spring performances or competitions to be evaluated by five judges at the Region Round. Each Region from around the state send their two highest scoring bands to the Area Round (Region 12 submitted Reagan and Johnson High Schools, both NEISD Schools), and each Area send their two highest scoring bands to the State Round.

The State Listenings occured on Friday, July 20, at the Texas Bandmasters Association convention. At state, the top two bands from each of the 7 TMEA areas advanced, and were ranked 1-14, with the top seven being named "Honor Band Finalists." This is the highest honor a Texas High School Wind Ensemble can receive in the state. The first place band of the state competition received receive an invitation to perform at the Texas Music Educators Convention in February of 2013.
