Jackson Keller families "cozy up with a good book"
Jackson Keller Elementary School held its annual Literacy Night event on Feb. 20. The event focused closely on providing parents and grandparents with literacy tools they can use at home to expand their children’s love for reading.
This year’s theme was “Cozy Up With a Good Book!” The students in attendance dressed in their pajamas and brought their favorite books from home.
"The teacher read the book that I wanted her to read, and it was fun to wear our pajamas to school," said Hailee, a second grader.
The teachers of Jackson Keller provided opportunities for parents and students to listen to stories being read aloud while children enjoyed a snack and quality time with their families.
"I really enjoyed the children's response to the stories," said Lynn Trimble, a third grade teacher. "I loved seeing that little dance in their eyes throughout the story."
While reading, teachers modeled good reading strategies, and parents were then given time to practice those same strategies with their children during "Family Reading Time” at the event. Teachers also sent home reading resources and activities in both English and Spanish for the parents and grandparents in attendance.
Many students earned literacy-based prizes like books, games, flashcards, writing resources, and puzzles.
"Having my mom read a book was my favorite part and the prizes too!" said one kindergartner.
