Jackson-Keller celebrates the genius of dr. seuss
Last week, the students and staff of Jackson-Keller Elementary were into all things Seuss! Throughout the week, theme days were held in celebration of some of the most famous books by Dr. Seuss. Students and staff participated in the following theme days:
Monday: “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins Day”- Wear your favorite hat!
Tuesday: “Fox in Socks Day”- Wear crazy socks!
Wednesday: “Oh the Places You’ll Go Day”- Wear a shirt from somewhere you’ve visited!
Thursday: “The Cat in the Hat Day”- Wear black, white, and red to look like the Cat in the Hat!
Friday: “Green Eggs and Ham Day”- Wear green!
Many Dr. Seuss books were read by teachers and students alike. In addition, ties to math, science, core virtues, and art were included in the week’s activities. Students were given the opportunity to estimate the number of Suess-tastic items (such as Lorax tree seeds and the fish from 'One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish') in several different jars at the “Estimation Station.”
In the Science Lab, they experimented with Oobleck (from the book 'Bartholomew and the Oobleck'), and they helped the Grinch have a heart by writing random acts of kindness and kind words on hearts and placing them on a larger-than-life Grinch in the front hallway of the school.
The fabulous cafeteria staff created an exciting lunchroom experience for our students by dressing as the famous Cat in the Hat one day, and many of the students found very creative ways to celebrate the week through their clothing and accessories as well.
Students were given literacy-based reading and writing materials as prizes for their creativity throughout the week. The students who made the closest estimations at the Estimation Station were also given some great goodies to further their literacy development! The week was quite exciting, and the students can’t wait to celebrate Dr. Seuss again next year!
