ISA students host MUNSA XIV simulation/conference

DATE: Dec. 7-9
TIME: Varies
LOCATION: Municipal Auditorium, 100 Auditorium Circle and El Tropicano Hotel, 100 Lexington Avenue

Students from the International School of the Americas (ISA) will host the Model United Nations of San Antonio (MUNSA) XIV: Origins simulation/conference from December 7-9, 2009 at Municipal Auditorium and the El Tropicano Hotel in San Antonio. MUNSA XIV is the largest high school Model United Nations conference held in the western United States.

This is a student-organized conference where participants will assume roles as diplomats representing the United Nations and debate current real-world issues in an attempt to solve problems. Debate issues include Security Council, World Health, Economics and Politics, Human Rights, the World Trade Organization and International Atomic Energy, to name a few. More than 750 students from Texas, surrounding states and Mexico will gather and formally debate during eight sessions throughout the conference.

During the Closing Ceremonies and Awards, some student delegates will be given awards based on their debate skills, character performance and participation.

All North East ISD schools will be charged $30 per delegate, and those staying at the El Tropicano Hotel will pay $30 per delegate. All other outside delegations will pay $40 per delegate. There will be a school fee of $35, and a sponsor fee of $25. For more registration information, visit the MUNSA Web site at http://www.neisd.net/isa/MUNSA/registration.html.

As part of the conference, the students have included a humanitarian cause in their attempt to think globally and act locally. MUNSA has adopted Haven for Hope, an organization providing resources and assistance to allow homeless people to become self-sufficient. Students are asking for contributions, such as monetary support; non-perishable food items; gently-used clothing, shoes, books and toys; diapers and other parent needs; and school and office supplies. The goal is to fill a semi-truck full of donations to be given after the conference.

The ISA students are part of Model United Nations, a global organization that students created more than 50 years ago to simulate the United Nations General Assembly. Today, more than 400 conferences take place in 35 countries with more than 200,000 high school and college/university students participating each year. Since Model United Nations began, more than 1,000,000 people have participated in conferences around the world.

MUNSA Mission statement: Model United Nations of San Antonio is a non-profit, student run organization that seeks to create a dynamic learning opportunity for students from the San Antonio area, the state of Texas, the United States of America, and Mexico. As a simulation, MUNSA strives to offer a forum in which academic, leadership, and interpersonal skills combine and lead students in discussions on our world's most pressing problems.
